"2012 SPORTSMAN SHOW"

"Hi Everyone - hope the New Year has found you all safe and happy.  As one year closes another begins and now that we've gotten one event off the books (GEE Rest Stop) another is coming up on us quickly - the SPORTSMAN SHOW!  This event is scheduled to run at the Portland Expo Center February 7th-12th.  The 7th which is Tuesday, is our only day to setup the event.  Jon Becker will be spear-heading this for me as I will have to work but if you can volunteer to help with this setup the help is welcomed!  The show times are as follows:

---Doors open to public and close---

Tuesday, February 7th - SETUP times to be announced! - need a minimum of 12 people

Wednesday, February 8th 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, February 9th 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Friday, February 10th - 11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 11th - 10 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sunday February 12th - 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Before you ask, YES we will be having a shuttle again this year.  The shuttle will be parked at DICK'S SPORTING GOODS parking lot off Marine Drive.  A shuttle contact number will be available to call if you arrive and the shuttle is not there - but please be patient with little bit of info as I haven't worked out that detail to a fine point yet, but my number is always a good place to start SO TAKE MY NUMBER WITH YOU AND HAVE IT READILY AVAILABLE 503-960-9850!  When you sign up for a shift, please plan on arriving no later than one half hour (1/2) prior to your shift starting.  If you are working the opening shift, please arrive no earlier than one (1) hour prior to the doors opening - I'll have more detail on how early we can actually be at the event each morning, but if you arrive within that one (1) hour time frame you should be good.  As we do each year you will have to go to the Will Call office to check in - you will get your name checked off their list (which I will be providing to them) and your hand stamped - if you are not on the list when it goes into the Will Call Office you will have to see me or Jon Becker to have this taken care of.

OK, now onto to the volunteering part of this letter.  As is with each year it's is asked that you sign up for a minimum of a four (4) hour shift or block of time.  A signup sheet will be available at the January and February meetings so I can get all slots filled - Remember if you can't do more than that no worries, but the more you can volunteer the easier it will be on those who are working the entire week.  I am requiring this year that everyone who signs up put a valid contact number down as well.  Recently I had a need to call some members, but due to our members list not being current or accurate, it was difficult to get a hold of people.

WE NEED YOU!! Please check your calendars and see me at the next two meetings as well as by phone at 503-960-9850 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and let me know what day(s) and shift(s) you will be able to work.

SEE YOU AT THE SHOW!!

The search for gold was a major factor in attracting people to the west and northwest from the mid 1800’s to about 1900. Gold prospecting still has a vital place in the development of our natural resources AND can be done without harming nature.

The Northwest Mineral Prospector's Club (NWMPC) was organized to provide support for a group of people wishing to learn about minerals and prospecting and who love the outdoors.

We hold a monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month as well as other outings and events so make sure to check out our Events Schedule.

NWMPC has gold claims at the following locations:

  • Mollalla Recreational Area just east of Mollalla, Oregon
  • Quartzville Creek near Sweethome, Oregon
  • Brice Creek east of Cottage Grove, Oregon
  • Chetco River near Brookings, Oregon
  • Copper Creek near Mt. St. Helens in Washington

Thus giving its members the opportunity and the right to prospect for gold and other minerals in a designated area. Many of our members have their own private claims in California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, to which club members are periodically invited.

NWMPC has various pieces of mining equipment available for member’s "use" and a mining library. The club sponsors monthly raffles and "Pappy Bucks" to encourage membership and attendance. Our members vary from the novice to the dedicated experienced miner.

A complimentary newsletter is given to interested guests. We feature club outings to our claims, films on prospecting, clinics on various methods of gold recovery (including electronic detection), treasure hunts, potlucks and other fun events.
